Before You Invest - One Critical Thing You Should Not Miss

I've been investing for the past two years in Philippines Stock Market.
When I started this blog, I only intended to make this as my online finance diary. I got that idea of making journal when I discovered in my PI100 undergraduate class (Life and Works of Rizal) that our national hero Rizal had so much letters exchanges with many different personalities.

So while making my first moves in building my financial foundation, I made sure to make records of it. I was financial literacy-poor and started even poorer back then. Now, I'm pleased to have my chunks of investments now. The journey has been good so far (Thanks to the bullish run)!
Sometimes, when I check during a random trading day, I see my investments growing much more than I'm being paid now, which could be the reason why so many are tempted to be actively managing and trading especially that we're seeing bull market. While I sometimes entertain the thought, I'm planning to really make my investments as passive as it can be.

I was missing something.

But when I attended the Registered Financial Planning class (on its batch 28), I realized that investment is really just a tiny component of the whole financial planning picture. In fact, there are several areas one needs to look on first before even thinking of branding yourself as an investor of giant companies. It was so imperative that I had to make sure I'm applying the sound financial principles I was learning from that day on. It's so critical that one mistake I might commit can erase all my investments together with all the hard work and memories in building that up.

That's also the reason why when I organized the market outlook 2013 seminar, I intentionally added an overview section about personal finance and invited Sir Ricky So to remind everyone that buying and owning stock is not the end goal, but merely to use investments as just one of the tools for an individual to attain his life goals. These personal goals in turn should be the ultimate reason behind all the financial planning and committed habits you're putting in your life now.

In fact, financial planning is simply just like that - designing your financial life to achieve your life's goals, be it education for children, house and lot, car, vacation, long-term purchases, retirement, etc.
The whole idea of financial planning rests on five simple steps: (1) Knowing your life goals (2) Assessing your present financial condition (3) Identifying available options/tools/alternatives and coming up with a reasonable plan (4) Executing the plan and (5) Regular monitoring.

Now, it may seem that those are obvious lessons, but the implication, if ignored, can literally turn your life upside down.

My Experience With My Tatay

Once upon a time, when I was in my third year in college, a big disaster has blown my family.
My grandfather, whom I dearly call Tatay, was rushed to a hospital (Lung Center of the Philippines). His bad habit of heavy smoking during his younger years was then taking its toll on his health. Though he's no longer taking a cigarette stick, it was already too late for him.

Since he's also no regular source of income aside from his tiny pension from SSS, our family who was living with him had to do the taking care. That meant taking time to look after him while he's confined and finding ways to finance the hospitalization.

You see my family was not prepared for that.
I think we were never ready.
My mother had to extend her neck out to find ways to shoulder the expenses looming every single day. She went to PCSO, friends, mayor. Congressman, councilor even our barangay chairman. I guess when you're really in a very desperate situation, no one can stop you in extending the life of a person you love.

I couldn’t exactly explain how I felt that time. I was only a student facing such a real challenge for the first time. Somehow a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness occupied me. Helplessness because I couldn’t help in finding ways to cover the bills; hopelessness because I saw my Tatay getting weaker each day.

When I saw a rubber tube pierced to his body with the other end connected to a collecting bottle, I knew it's never going to be back to normal.
Time came when he was needed to be moved to ICU. Few days later, he's back to the "normal room". Few more days after, the doctor gave advice that he could be brought home. He was in the hospital for more than a month.

But before leaving the hospital, we deeply felt that the head of our household wanted to stay longer in the hospital so he could be taken care better, but knowing the burden of that extension, we felt too that he had just kept that thought in himself.

When we went home, good things lasted only very shortly, as some had expected...

He was my first fan.

He once mentioned before that his only dream was to see me graduating in college. It's already big for him considering that he had only finished until Grade 2.

Sadly, heaven didn't grant his wish. At a young age of 68 years old, my first avid fan left us. It was also my very first time to have a taste of the reality of death of someone who's been a big part of your life. His dream for me came true only two long years later, which I offered to him with my prayers.

This is not just my story

That story is just one of the real stories highlighting the fact that many patients are dying not because there's no medicine or doctors to attend to them, but because there's no money to pay for doctors and medication.
I and my Tatay during my elementary graduation

The two questions we all need to answer

Recently, I availed this financial product (from IMG) that I believe addresses this concern.
It takes care about the three major financial needs of anyone - healthcare, insurance and investment. It's a three-in-one package that can contribute to one's financial foundation.

You see there are two major problems when it comes to money (I got this from Bo Sanchez' book): (1) you can die too young or (2) live too long.

That's just another way of saying what financial planners suggest: the first goal anyone should have is to be safe; then the goal of a comfortable life comes second. The first goal - to be safe – sounds very simple, yet very few are aware of its utmost significance.
The second – to be comfortable – is something that everyone looks forward to.

Now you see what hooked me up in the product: the Insurance component can give peace  and protection to your family in case the first unfortunate case happens whereas the long-term healthcare and investment parts are there in case you live too long to provide you healthcare and generate a passive income. So it’s also like your giant piggy bank that can help answer your retirement needs. What's good is that it can be payable only in just five years.

As what I've learned, the goal is to be self-insured. We want our money to grow year after year to a point where we no longer need insurance. But at this point we cannot do that, we use the blessing of insurance+healthcare with investment as bonus.

In case you also want that type of investment, I can ask a friend-agent to do a free financial check up for you and see how the product can specifically address your need or of your relatives. As each person has different situation, a closer look needs to be done to suit your specific situation better. You can send email (pinoyinvesting@gmail.com) if you need more information.
That’s all for now!

While we're now in the 21st century, the solid financial principles remain the same.
Aim to have a great financial foundation. Let's prepare for the coming years of our lives!

Have fun investing (with peace and preparation)!

For OFW - Yes you can invest too!

Sharing a short online interview of an OFW investor in Philippines Stock Market.
Yes, even if you're abroad, you can join the very tiny percentage of Philippines population making their money in stocks investing. Thanks to internet! Anyone can now do online investing.
Let's do our own share in spreading financial literacy to all our fellow Filipinos.
It doesn't really have to be a big show, a segway kwento during your lunch break, for example, will do.
And don't lose heart if they ignore your at first.

As Bro Bo said, most people need to be marinated before they get to absorb the message that will help them.
We may not see the rewards of doing it now, but our children's generation will surely reap it once our country becomes a more progressive one.
Let's all dream that for our dear Philippines where no more families have to go abroad and leave their family for a greener pasture.
Say yes! (YES!)
Enjoy the Friday!
Have fun investing (even outside the Philippines)!

Introduce yourself

I’m an OFW based in Middle East.

How did your interest in stocks start?

Blame it all to Bo Sanchez and his sweet talks . Bo opened my mind to investing in stocks. I joined his club for a year to see what he is talking about, though I am still adamant to start investing. After a year of reading and brainstorming myself, I decided to send the form to Citiseconline, and from then on, I never looked back.

How long have you been in Philippine stock market?

I was only doing stock market investing since 2009, so I always tell everyone I spoke to (both online and offline) na I am no expert in this field, and I am continuously learning from day to day on how to be successful in this trade.

What's your strategy and plan in doing your investment/trades?

When I first started, I followed everything that was being given by Bo Sanchez in his TRC update. Nowadays, I do swing trading if I am not busy for the week, but most of the time, I do momentum trading, where I only find stocks which tells me that there is a high probability of an uptrend in the coming days/week. I then exit my position whenever my stop is triggered to secure my profit, and re-enter again if there is another opportunity. I don’t keep stocks for more than a month.

Where do you get your guidance in your decisions?

Self study ako palagi...i find it challenging...
So far, it had given me profits based on my self-study.
But i don't share it with others kasi i'm not an expert...i may give my opinion, pero may disclosure palagi ...

Any regrets so far?

Regrets? None. I never regretted the day I started investing in the stock market, as it opened a new opportunity for me to grow and meet other people who have the same interest as I do…to become rich.

What lesson(s) do you want to share to others?

Learning stock market investing is comparable to the time when we were learning to ride our bicycles. The ultimate goal is to be able to ride the bike unattended, and even perform tricks later on. Some of us used the training wheel, so at least we may feel the independence of riding a bike until we get the hang of it. This is the same as when I was following Bo Sanchez’s TRC update. I was able to gain confidence with the stock market, same as the confidence we gained in riding a bike, but still I am dependent with the training wheels (TRC Update). Some of us, however, likes the faster way of learning. They start riding the bike without the training wheel, and uses the other person’s capability to hold the bike for us and let go whenever they want. What happened most of the time is that we fall and hurt ourselves in the silly process. This is, again, comparable to those learning to trade without any prior knowledge of the stock and rely only on other people’s tips. Those stupid enough to listen to their advise (including me) got burned with their precious hard earned money. When we fall, we managed to get up, and ride the bike again to become a better rider. It’s not how many times you had a bad trade, but how many times you managed to stand up from that losing trade, and learn from it to become better next time. During our quest of being a better rider (trader), we start to use protective gears (stops) and learned to ride the bike whenever we want (entry), and disembark whenever (exit). We tend to look for a better bike to ride to provide us the comfort by looking at its specifications meeting our requirement (Fundamental Analysis), and some people learn tricks on how to ride a bike (Technical Analysis). If you look at it this way, you will then realize that the only person who taught you how to become a better rider (trader) is yourself, and reliance to other people did not make you better, but used their opinion instead to see if it will suit your requirement (risk appetite). Never stop learning.

What is your greatest investment in life?

My greatest investment in life is my family. Always make time for your family, and let the money work for you.

Final shout-out to those just starting to invest.

People have different personality, which means people have different risk tolerance. If you ask a person which stock to pick, or ask if it’s ok to enter the trade, it is often dependent on the risk appetite of the person you asked. Learn to study the company’s fundamental and check if it will fit your requir-ment of long term objective. Do not ask questions such as “Is it ok to buy?” etc, coz no one soul can predict the behavior of the market. Ask questions such as “how good is the company”, to give you that peace of mind that you’re money is all in good hands. Average is always your friend, of course, for long term investment.

The Difference Between Investing & Trading

Do you have an experience of experimenting to do a short-term trade and then deciding to switch it  to long-term because of the big losses you see?
You're not alone!

Below is a short article by  taken from CNBC, a good reminder in knowing how you really want to go about your investment and the importance of sticking to your goal and set plan.
Enjoy!

“Not all Wall Street gibberish is deceptively complicated,” Cramer said Monday. “Some of it is deceptively simple.”
Case in point: The idea of investing versus trading.
A lot of people use the terms interchangeably, but they shouldn’t. At least on Mad Money, they carry very different meanings. An investment is based on a long-term thesis, while a trade is any stock purchase made to profit from a short-term catalyst. Mixing up the two can cause some serious damage to your portfolio.
Only buy a stock as a trade when you know there’s some future event that could drive its stock price higher. Maybe, if we’re talking about a pharmaceutical company or a biotech, it’s the release of positive clinical trial data. Whatever the catalyst, though, the strategy is to game that news and, hopefully, take profits after. But even if the plan doesn’t pan out and you lose money, Cramer said, you must take profits once the catalyst has past. The biggest mistake you can make is to turn a trade into an investment.
On the investing side, you might see some short-term declines, but that’s OK. The goal here is to bank profits over the longer term. So those dips are just a chance to buy more of the stock in question, provided you still believe in the thesis that brought you to it in the first place. And if the stock should rise in price, don’t take your money and run. Should your thesis hold true, there will be still more good news ahead for the company.
Cramer made this last mistake himself with Apple back when it was trading at $26. The share price jumped $5 and he took profits. Yup, at $31 he cashed out. His price target for Apple now, in a world where apparently everyone wants an iPhone and iPad? $300.

Welcome to this "ABOUT PAGE!"

Email me if instead if you have specific question --> call me Omeng - pinoyinvesting@gmail.com.

If you're new to investing or to stocks, you'll want to know that this blog has been written to serve you.

The goal is pretty simple - to cover the basics and essentials of stocks investing and help you help yourself in your financial life.

Initially I just wanted to give back the fun I had investing in the stock market by sharing the fun with you (yeah, investing should be fun).

But on the other side, I’m afraid I might be giving you an incomplete picture of what stock investing is all about. I might be pushing you into the realm of gambling in the stock market as opposed to investing. As you know, gambling should not be encouraged, more so in public.

But just to help you get started, I managed to go on and compiled all the practical learning I had from my own experience. So in effect you're saving yourself from possible mistakes (and financial losses) you could have by reading this blog.

Make no mistake. I don't claim to be perfect at investing. Like you, I continue to learn (and I like it that way).

But if you want your money to start working for you one day soon, allow me to sing your first lullaby.

I’m glad to be part of your financial journey!
Run on!

Now on to "About me".
You see, I had a very poor relationship with money before.  And I now realized it was a combination of three reasons.

First, I came from a poor family.
My father was working as a taxi driver. To augment that income, my mother took a janitorial job. Still, their combined income was hardly enough to make the ends meet. How could you expect their minimum income to cover sending three children to school?

Later on, my older sister had to delay her college so that my older brother could continue his education. Fortunately I received a government scholarship grant that covered my college tuition with monthly allowance.  In all those years, I was trained to live a simple life. Or better yet, I had no choice but to learn the ropes of a simple-but-most-of-the-times-lacking life.

Second, the type of surroundings I grew up in for two long decades had also stained how I viewed wealth.
We never talked about money in our family simply because we didn’t have it. I couldn’t recall a single discussion about building a business. I didn't even have an idea of how bank deposits works.

All I was hearing was how my mother would try to do all the tricks and magic to cover all the family expenses with their meager salary which comes every week. We were used to our limited resources. But in the process I became financially ignorant. Worse, I became limited in my dreams. My vision was contained in a small world opened up to me.

The third and last reason is that I had really terribly awful beliefs about money.
I subconsciously saw well-off people as greedy oppressive group. I guess I got that from watching night TV series that would almost always have similar plot. A poor lady meets this young man who belongs to a wealthy family, who would then do all means to cut the relationship, revealing their wicked character.

Then on weekends you hear a Sunday preaching telling you to stop thinking about making money. That money won't make you happy. That money is the root of all evil. So eventually I had problems combining money and God. If God saves the poor, who would save the rich? So why should I be rich?

I was trapped.

After being bombarded by those kinds of thoughts for so many years, I was "effectively" and helplessly conditioned not to desire to have money, to be a poor receiver and to limit myself in being small, without being aware of it. Sure I had my own child dreams, but those are as small as the possibilities presented to me.

It went so deep into my beliefs that when I finally graduated in college and shortly landed on my first job, a strange fear came creeping into myself thinking that I might forget the values I have once I started earning by myself. That I might be controlled by money instead of I being able to handle it. I was totally afraid of money!!

Then that fateful day happened.

I came across this book by Bo Sanchez - 8 Secrets of the Truly Rich.

I was hesitant at first to read it. It was pure struggle. But after reading one chapter after another, munching its message with struggles at the start, my beliefs was slowly changed. Slowly my mind was unlocked to more opportunities. I felt I was finally given the divine permission to be truly rich for the right reason, for love.

It's the same message I've been hearing in The Feast, the weekly gathering of Light of Jesus Family.  We're asked to dream big, not out of selfish ambition but out of love. We're asked to put constant actions on it, but still relying in God's grace for His perfect plan and timing.

In hindsight, I now realized that God has allowed me to go through such a journey to prepare me in the blessings that would come my way. In all those years, God has been molding me and forming my character in the next phase of my life. Since I knew the feeling of being poor, in being in need, I can now appreciate God's wealth more. Since I lived in a state of lack and scarcity, I can now cherish and welcome God's abundance even more. And now I'm saying "Yes" to God's blessings.

Blessed to be a blessing!

Now I have a supportive relationship with money. Working in the corporate world for two years, I am delighted to have hundreds of thousands in my investments now. I'm also blessed to have additional passive income which began interestingly when I started tithing. It may be small for some, but I am more than happy to have that kick-off at this planting season of my life.  But more than the figure, the enlightenment and God's grace behind it gives me the real fulfillment from it. It's not just about having that lump of money, but being a better and more responsible steward of blessings God has gifted me.

I can now have that priceless joy in providing for my family. Because God has given me, I am also able to give. Because I'm blessed, I am blessing others.

Finally whenever someone asks me about my financial life, I would jokingly answer "sapat na sa tatlong pamilya".

That's somehow my self-reminder that whatever material blessings God gives me should provide for my three families: for the family God had given me and the one I would be called to have in the future, for the spiritual family that nourishes my soul and expands God's work on earth, and for my bigger family with my brothers and sisters in Christ.

And as I continue to expand my territories and focus on my dreams, I am so thankful and grateful to the Lord for giving me the ability to create wealth, the power to multiply it, the heart to share it and the wisdom that ultimately, real wealth is found only in His presence, in His love, in His everlasting embrace.

To God be all the glory!

Secrets of Filipino tycoons revealed

TIP 3 - Easy Monitoring of your Stock Transactions

In this post, I'll be sharing another tip that I do.

This is not actually a tip for trading but one on monitoring side.

As I've shared in one of my lessons during the bull run, investment monitoring is an equally important aspect of investing.
It's very important that we have a clear measure of how our investments are doing! At the end of the day, we spend time and resources to investing because we know we're getting something from it. So we better make sure that we actually do.

This one is very simple and straightforward using our email platforms.

You see, my online stockbroker COL Financial sends various email to their clients as part of their services. So from what I received, I filter them into three email folders:
(1) COL Trades
(2) COL Cashflow
(3) COL Miscellaneous.

The division is self-explanatory.

COL Trades folder collects all emails about each of my trade or buy and sell order that gets matched.

COL Cashflow folder collects all emails about, well, flows affecting my cash. That includes deposit confirmation, notice of withdrawals and notice of cash/stock dividends. Most of the times, I actually get surprised when I receive dividends I don't expect.

Lastly, the third folder COL Miscellaneous collects all email not falling on the two folders above.
They're mostly clients-invitations to market outlook events they regularly organize and holiday messages from the management.

With this tip, you can trace back all the transactions and summarize and consolidate it in one sitting.
Being in the stock market going three years, I felt this tip is more practical and time-saving than recording each of your transactions every time you make one.
Well, I actually did it that way when I was starting, and it wasn’t just sustainable for me.
Besides, the investing strategy I have now requires not that kind of monitoring needing frequent recording.

Once you have set-up your email filters (so that each email from COL will go automatically to its designated folder), you can set aside a regular schedule to check these folders and go through the emails.

You can do it every year, every six months, or every quarter. If you're more active and do lots of transactions, you can do this every week or month. Simply check your emails and put all your transaction amounts in your excel monitoring file.

Aside from this, you can also print a monthly statement of account you can download online.
The tip is really to make your email an easy-access database of your transactions (and a financial journal too). This can also give us peace knowing we have something in our hands to present to Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) in case COL Financial broker shuts down (which I don't see in the near term).

You can also read and add to this discussion thread on how other investors monitor their COL funding transactions.

And that's our featured tip this week!
So far this is our third tip, with two other helpful tips below.
Tip 1 - Have your reserved cash       Tip 2 - The 8K rule

Have fun investing (knowing how well you're doing)!

Truly Rich Club Stocks Alert - Sell AGI

Just roughly a month after Truly Rich Club included AGI in its stock picks to-buy list, now I received a stock alert to sell it.
Here's the exact word from Bo Sanchez:
Sell AGI (Alliance Global Inc.) because it’s hitting our Target Price.
I can’t believe it: After one month only, I’m already telling you to sell.
From the proceeds, you can either sit on your cash or buy MER (Meralco).
Two reasons why we like MER.
It gives 3.5% Cash Dividends every year.
It won’t just distribute power, it will now generate power.
Oh, the market is crazy! It’s scary.
May your dreams come true,
Bo Sanchez

Exactly one month prior today, the club previously sent the Stocks Alert to buy MER and AGI.

Stocks Alert: Buy AGI and MER
I know a lot of TrulyRichClub members having been waiting for this.
In the past few weeks, we’ve sold some Stocks and so we’ve got cash in our hands.  And out of the six companies in our SAM list, only three companies are still below our Buy-Below price: MPI, FPH, and MBT.

Thankfully, we can add two more companies today: AGI (Alliance Global) and MER (Meralco).

Just divide your cash (proceeds of stocks we sold) into five or six months, and invest one part each month.  And add to this amount your usual monthly investment.  That’s what you divide into our two new Stocks, AGI or MER.
(You may also keep buying our older stocks MPI, FPH, and MBT.)

Happy investing!
May your dreams come true,
Bo Sanchez

You see, club members are actually well taken care of every single trading day.
While regular Stocks Updates are sent only every two weeks, you can still receive urgent concrete short actions steps, such as the one above, at any time wherever you are through its Stocks alert (Thanks to internet!)

While others are busy and taking lots of time to study (which is actually good), or keep on waiting forever, we choose to stand on the shoulders of giants, we leverage on the expertise of people who have practically devoted all their life into analyzing stocks investing… and make nice profits in their filtered process.

Congrats to AGI investors!

Have fun investing (while reaping your profits)!

If you're just starting to invest, download this practical ebook to guide you in every step of the way - Investing in Philippines Stock Market for Beginners!

PS2:  Are you joining Truly Rich Club because of these Stock Updates? Read on.
First, what I actually like most in the club is its inspiring sets of audio files. The club calls it PowerTalks. And yes, for me, they're powerful enough to keep me going in my plans and dreams.

Listening to those (during commuting time), my mind and my emotions are urged to become one - which can be a very powerful drive. To add, our mind has its boundaries we can never contain. And the nice thing is that once something enters our mind, it can live there forever (which explains why it's critical to choose what you feed your mind!).

So while Stock Updates can be very profitable in the stock market, those are only secondary to me. At the least, they're short-term. Once you're done selling, that's it.

But cultivating one's mind can impact you in a much longer term, for the rest of your life, in the same way that your thoughts in the past have brought you to where you're in exactly now.
So if you're joining the club because of mere stock updates, take a second look.
You're staring at the incomplete picture.
In fact, if you'll just be persistent, you can get all the stock updates you want in various online sites (very limited though and might be come to you incomplete).

I urge you to think of its entirety. Because that's how the club is designed, drastically changing your life… by first changing your mind.

To try it out, check the details here.

PS3: If you also know of any other paid online subscription (related to personal finance planning and coaching) that you believe is better than what Truly Rich Club offers, let me know so I can also review and possibly share in this blog in the future.
